Look For These Comfort Elements When You Shop For Shoes

Vicky Ellis

As many men age, they reach a point at which they still want what they wear to look good, but they also want to be comfortable. This approach can especially hold true with footwear, and the good news is that it's possible to find shoes that look stylish but still provide support for your feet and allow you to walk or stand for long periods of time without discomfort. When you're shopping for a new pair of shoes and have identified some pairs that catch your eye, make sure to try them on to evaluate these factors related to how they fit.

Insole Support

The insoles of the shoes you're considering buying should provide support in multiple ways. When you try on the shoes and walk around, you should ideally feel some support beneath your arch; the arch supports of the insoles shouldn't be so high that stepping causes you pain, but also shouldn't be so low that you don't feel any pressure in their region, either. You should also feel a high degree of cushioning beneath your heel. You heel can strike the ground with considerable force, and if you're on your feet all day in the shoes, your heels could be sore by the end of the day. You want the insoles to give you a pleasant sensation of sponginess.

Room For Your Toes

Some stylish shoes cause your toes to get crammed together, but style doesn't have to mean discomfort. When you walk around in the shoes, make sure that there's adequate room for your toes; you should be able to wiggle them freely. Doing so partly depends on you choosing the correct size of shoes, but also on the design of the shoes. Some shoes are simply designed to have more space for the toes, and finding this type of model will give you a higher degree of comfort.

Ankle Stability

If you're prone to rolling your ankles when you walk or have occasionally experienced sprains, it's ideal for the shoes to have some manner of ankle support. This doesn't mean that they need to be high cuts, but it does mean that whatever amount of material on the sides of the shoes is stiff enough that it will help to keep your ankles in place in an upright position. The ankle support should be comfortable, rather than too tight; you want to feel that your ankles are supported without feeling that they're pinched.
