4 Tips for Caring for Your Skin If You Exercise Outdoors

Vicky Ellis

Your skin is your largest organ, and it is very important to take care of it properly. This is especially important if you spend a lot of time exercising outdoors. Use the following tips to keep your skin healthy when you exercise outside on a regular basis.

Wear Protective Clothing

Exercise clothes that are right for the gym may not be the best choice when you're out in the sun. Many people do not realize that regular clothing does not totally block out the harmful rays from the sun. If you want to prevent skin damage and reduce the risk of skin cancer, make sure you buy clothing that has UV sun protection to wear when you are outside exercising.

In addition to UV sun-protection clothing, wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and the skin surrounding them. Choose sunglasses that have lenses that block out both UVA and UVB rays; you may also want to consider polarized sunglasses to help cut the glare of the sun. A tight-fitting hat is also a good thing to wear to further protect the skin on your face.

Slather on the Sunscreen

Prior to your exercising outside, it is essential to apply sunscreen to your face and all areas of your body that are not covered by your UV sun-protection clothing. Choose a sunscreen with a high SPF factor and put on more than you think you need. Exercise will most likely make you work up a sweat, so make sure to reapply sunscreen regularly if you're going to be exercising outdoors for an extended period of time.

Drink a Lot of Water

Exercising and sweating can cause you to lose fluids, so make sure that you always carry a water bottle while exercising outside and drink as much water as possible. Dehydration is not good for your overall health, and if you are chronically dehydrated, your skin can suffer. When it comes to exercising outside, the more water consumed, the better.

Promote Healthy Skin Through Diet

A healthy diet and regular exercise are a recipe for good health, and some foods may help keep your skin healthy. When planning your meals, try to incorporate foods rich in vitamin E and vitamin C. Essential fatty acids, found in foods like salmon, may also help minimize damage to your skin. The better you eat, the better you'll feel, and your skin will likely reflect that.
